Fewer germs in the theatre.

13 Oct 2017

I was recently left a little perplexed and surprised when I discovered the findings of this piece of research even though it makes perfect sense really.  It concludes that Surgeons can stop the spread of germs by operating in the nude.

Apparently research has revealed the finding that surgeons could operate in the nude to prevent infections.

The researchers found that naked surgeons shed significantly less bacteria than those wearing scrubs which, it is claimed, rub against the skin causing bacteria to fall off and spread through the air of the operating theatre.

You probably are seeing the funny side, as the doctors would be exposed (No pun intended).  I think I would feel fine about it.  However, one overriding thought keeps recurring in my head; what about the hanging bits… know what I mean?

We should go with whatever works in the best interest of the patient as far as I am concerned.  On a final note, how would you feel about working naked alongside your colleague?  I suppose that’s another story entirely.

No need to worry yet though:  in the UK guidelines issued by NICE the appropriate government body, they recommend a sterile gown, and that operating theatre staff only need to be ‘bare below the elbows.
