The sunset law

30 Dec 2017

Dear LPG

In the light of all the really tragic things that are happening in our country and our world these days, I just want to remind LPG readers of something that I was brought up to adhere to when I was young.

It is something my mother always used to say to me and that I now have discovered can be found in the bible.  In the book of Ephesians chapter 4 verse 26 Paul advises them, "In your anger do not sin".  My mum’s translation was “never let the sun go down on an argument”.   I can’t help but imagine what it is like to be the parent or friend of one of the young people who did not return from that concert in Manchester on 22 May 2017, or that found themselves on Westminster Bridge on the 22nd of March this year.  But their grief would be even more intense if they had had a row or argued with that person the last time they saw them.

We really have no control over what happens to us, and in a day and age where the awful things I made a point of avoiding when I saw them in TV dramas are becoming more and more of a reality,  I find my mother’s words increasingly relevant.
