Computers - Turning the thing on

01 Nov 2017

Dear LPG,

I know that many self-respecting IT Savvy members of the senior citizens club have, by now, most probably joined the tablet brigade, but I am still getting to grips with my lap top.  In a world where computers, mobile phones and so many other gadgets are superseded by bigger better and faster models within months of their purchase, I know that my laptop is having difficulty keeping up. I bet like me, many other readers get a bit exasperated with their computers from time to time and for many different reasons.

For me it is when I turn the thing on; but it is my fault because I forget to remember that you have to give an older computer time to remember where it is and what it’s doing.

Regardless of whether we are talking about people or computers, it takes the older models a bit of time to wake up, and remember where it is and what it can do.  Computers also have to work out how they can get to the internet. (time to find the permission that your router gives).

The answer to getting bored while you wait is this;  As soon as you turn it on, I suggest that you go and make a cup of tea or visit the little room  or do anything that will take a minute or two….     It takes a little longer as it gets a little older so, just give your lap top or PC computer 10 minutes to wake up properly.

Watching it will make the process seem longer and bring back memories of watching the BBC test card back in the 1970s, before there was all-night TV, and after the national anthem.
