Take part in Lewisham’s war memorials projects

11 Nov 2017

War memorials are important because they act as historical touchstones. They link the past to the present and enable people to remember and respect the sacrifice of those who died, fought, participated or were affected by conflicts. They can also help young people understand the sacrifices made by past generations.

Paul Dyer, a regional volunteer with the UK National Inventory of War Memorials, was aware of this importance. He investigated the different memorials in Lewisham and donated a large amount of paper and electronic research. This is how the Lewisham War Memorials wiki started.

The Lewisham War Memorials wiki aims to gather as much information as possible about all the different war memorials in Lewisham. However, they cannot do it alone, so they are asking people to provide information about these memorials. This information might be memories, biographical details, mementos, photos and documents.

A wiki is a website that can be edited by anyone, so you can just add some information that you think might be interesting. You have to follow these steps:

- Go to the Lewisham War Memorials wiki: http://lewishamwarmemorials.wikidot.com/
- Select the neighbourhood where the memorial you have information about is placed
- Select the memorial
- Follow the link that leads to the edition page

The aim of this project is to produce a final hard copy of it, which will be held at the Local History and Archives Centre. You have probably lived a lot and now you have a chance to share your knowledge with the rest of the world. Share what you know about war memorials and help future generations learn about all the people who made sacrifices for a better future.
