International Day of Peace

21 Sep 2018

Hello LPG,

I noted the news article, which was posted on 2nd September 2017.  I think that it was designed to make every one smile as it highlighted all the different days that are celebrated around the world annually.   While some of them are light-hearted comments on our lives, I really like the idea of celebrating this one.

Did you know that September 21st 1981, when it was first recognised by a United Nations resolution, has been known as the International Day of Peace?  (►►►)

I am not sure about other readers, but I believe that in our world where there are so many wars in progress much of the time (►►►) it is good to concentrate on peace for one day in the year.  I think that everyone must know someone who has experienced a conflict, either as a member of the armed forces, or because they come from an area which has been to war. But, for those of us who have lived in the UK all our lives and are younger than 72 years old, it is something that we have only seen happen somewhere else in the world courtesy of our televisions.  The many atrocities and terrorist actions that happen get me thinking about the victims, and I feel that the many films and dramas that are part of our lives blur the lines between fiction and reality.

Even in times of peace there are so many people with so many personal conflicts going on whatever their age; the conflict of living in poverty or with ill health; being lonely, being involved in a family feud or being housebound and so much more.

The focused theme for 2017 was designated as ‘Together for Peace: Respect, Safety and Dignity for All.’ and that is not a bad thing to celebrate or even give a passing thought to on any day.

So I just wanted to get LPG readers taking a little time to consider about something that really deserves more than a passing thought.
