Careful What You Flush!

04 Jan 2018

Dear LPG,

I just found some truly alarming news online and wanted to share it with LPG readers.

I have never really known why we are encouraged not to put kitchen roll and wet wipes down the toilet but it did not take me long to find out the main difference between all these products and toilet roll.   It is that toilet roll is especially designed to break down and cause minimum blockages as it winds its way around our sewer system.

What happens down there does not really affect most people unless they work for the water company or get a blockage in their own water system, but I have to admit to feeling quite sick when I watched a short film on the subject.  I am not for paying extra money but I think that the people who keep them clear for us deserve serious additional pay.

I know that I am guilty of throwing things down the loo that I now know are just helping to enlarge the problems.  I always do my best to recycle my bin rubbish but I think that we all need to be reminded about the clogged up problems that we don’t see.

I was surprised to learn a bit about other really big problem causers.  I think that we need to take note of the other things that become problematic when put down the u-bend.

So having learned what I have recently, on the subject.   I will be thinking more about what I flush, and using the air dryer machine and good old fashioned cotton towels where I can in future.

YR, Downham
