Ladies and gentlemen, we should all be thankful for soap
08 Jan 2018
Dear LPG,
I am talking to the ladies who read this post first of all. It is generally accepted that our gender produces the best gossips. I looked up the definition of the word gossip and found that the oxford online dictionary defines it as a verb meaning of the word to be “Casual or unconstrained conversation or reports about other people, typically involving details which are not confirmed as true.”
I don’t think that it is fair for me to speak for all my fellow females but I spent an awful lot of time chatting about many people whose details I did not have sufficient knowledge to start up a conversation about. There was a certain school lunch time when I was standing in the girl’s toilets talking to some school mates about a girl who, unbeknown to me, was listening to every word I said from one of the cubicles. That day I was left with egg on my face but I was not deterred and I am sure that everyone can remember a time when they drew their own conclusions about someone while talking to someone else; and be honest, generally, we are not very good at allowing the boys to get a word in edgewise. This has really affected the males especially our other halves and male members of our families, as well as ourselves.
Then, thank goodness, there was the soap opera. We have been through a few over the years and as I write this sentence I can almost see most of the men who read it, and a few of the women, rolling their eyes, but ever since their introduction we women have had people we can talk about who will not be too upset if we make the wrong assumptions about them. I have to admit that over the past few years there seem to have been more soap-fictional crimes committed, and more serious subjects tackled in their plots but these stories, whether they have Northern, Cockney, Australian, American origins or otherwise, they still old the interest of a large section of our communities and I think that the ladies will agree that it is so nice to have a common set of people to gossip about.
So gentlemen, even if you can’t stand them, celebrate them because they stop the female of the species from discussing you more often.
