Getting there…
20 Jan 2018
Isn’t it funny that when it comes to being aware of how to contact our friends we know either one of three things about them?
If we phone regularly we know how to access their phone number but it’s more than likely that if we have a mobile phone we don’t actually know their phone number (or ours for that matter). However, if we normally visit them we are likely to know exactly what their front door looks like, and also how many turnings from the bus stop we go before arriving at the end of the street or road where they live. If we only ever write to them we most probably could rattle off their full postal address, including post code, but it is more than likely that we have no idea about how to get there.
We are creatures of habit and the older ones amongst us could blame our failing memories, but I bet the youngsters are no different to us. I think that XX is right when she or he says that technology has spoiled us because we no longer need to know the details of what we can find on our mobile phones.
The point of my post is to highlight the magic of Google Maps (►►►) and similar apps where all you need to know is where you want to go and where you are leaving from before they tell you exactly how to get there, how long it will take regardless of where in the world you want to travel to, how long it will take regardless of the mode of transport you choose, and when you need to leave in order to get there at the time and on the date that you want to get there.
If you have a printer and the app on your computer, you can print out nearly every detail of the directions, and if you have it on your smart phone it will even talk you through the journey if you are driving. With the right settings on your mobile, it will even send you regular information lists about where you and your phone have been. This is a little worrying if you have something to hide, but think of the advantages if you get lost.
It is not that complicated once you get into it, but you will need to figure out how to get started. There are lots of videos on line that claim to be for beginners, but they can get complicated. I enlisted my granddaughter to show me the basics and then I spent a little time experimenting. I can’t say I know everything but I can get from A to B.
