Whales and the way we look?

31 Jan 2018

Dear LPG

I was watching TV recently and saw an advert for something I thought had gone out of fashion for the ladies of our world, but it appears that regardless of the age, and I mean our age and the age that we live in, so many of us are all still preoccupied with the way we look.

By and large, we women in the western world have been trying to improve our shapes since as far back as the 15th Century in an attempt to impress the men around us.  In the 1960’s women’s liberation looked as if it would put pay to the need to do this, but that idea proved to be pretty short lived.

It appears that now we are back where we started.  I know that many ladies will not admit it but, I wear a ‘watered down’ version of a corset which I believe makes my figure look a little better than the reality, but mine are personal reasons.  I am definitely not trying to impress anyone else (who am I trying to kid?)

When I took a look on the internet I could not help but notice just how many garments are still available to enhance the figure.  They no longer cause extreme pain by being so tight that the bones cut into the body because many of them now use elastic based products  to do the job that the whale bones did up until 100 years ago

Ladies, for many years, and like many other women, I really did not have any excuse, but now that I am well into my 6th decade, I like to blame my declining tightness of shape on the men that we are often trying to impress.  Pregnancy is perhaps the main reason for our change of shape, because of the effect of having stomach muscles stretched to the point of no return that producing our little ones had on us for some nine months at a time, although I now wish that I took a little more time to do all those exercises that were supposed to strengthen tummy muscles after that event.

You would think that men get away with this but don’t be fooled, they can usually blame overeating and excess beer drinking for their lack of shape but, let’s face it, everything goes south as we get older.  I was surprised when I found out just how many body shaping products for men are on the market today.

I suppose we can feel better when we see the adverts because so many of them seem to be aimed at people a whole lot younger than us oldies, and it is also to be noted that if you have back problems into the bargain we can thank the invention of the corset for helping with the development of the back brace, but that is a completely different subject…

It seems to me that we have gone full circle and come out the other end with a variation on an age old theme.
