Questions, questions?

19 Feb 2018

Dear LPG,

I had my last car for 17 years and bought it new but it had to go this year, so I have just bought another brand new car and I am quite happy.  But as you can imagine there are so many new things on it that I am learning as I go along.  The dealer that sold it to me told me about all the new innovations it has, and I do have to say that there are lots of new features.   I was advised that I could have a tracker fitted for security purposes and so I had that done, but the people who did it told me that they installed two of these things, surely I only need one.   I did not want to sound ignorant when they told me so I accepted and just paid for the fitting service at the time, but now I do have questions.  Why do I need two of these things?  How should I go about finding out more?

CP, Lee

Regardless of the issue that you are not clear on, having reached a situation similar to CP’s, LPG has a few suggestions.  We could be talking about many different issues; perhaps a medical condition that was explained by the doctor, but that you still don’t understand, or a financial point of law that still does not make sense etc.

First we would suggest that it would have been good to ask questions about everything you don’t understand at the time, and be prepared to ask them again and again.  Get the experts to explain the answer until you completely understand their reasoning.

If you leave the building still feeling that the explanation is not satisfactory, it is time to contact another company, department, or agency (depending on your question) that provides the same service and work out if talking with a second agency is making things any clearer.   You could even tell the second set of people you approach that you are thinking of having the work done and that you want to know more about it before throwing in the specifics of your real question and asking why.

It may then be a good idea to see if there is a legal or statutory reason why you need to have the work done.

After having done this research and armed with the facts, you will be better informed as to whether marks have been overstepped.  It may then be time to go back to the people who left you with the original question to query their explanation in more detail.

This is just an LPG suggestion that we hope will help but we would also advice a quick chat with Citizens Advice Tel: 0800 231 5453 available Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm.
