An alternative celebration of bravery.

20 Apr 2018

Dear LPG,

I have always been one of those people who were keen to learn about what is beyond this world.  Si-Fi caught my interest when I was really young, but Si-Fact also intrigued me.

What were you doing 46 years ago today?   I was busy following the journey of Apollo 16, and when it reached the moon I was caught up in the excitement, even though by then for many it was not a reason to stop everything else.   It was, after all, the 5th time that the moon had been reached, the penultimate mission in the series, and I remember looking at the footage that was sent back to earth for us to see.  I remember marvelling that humans had managed to achieve so much in spite of all the danger involved.  Whenever we got pictures from beyond earth I was reminded of the First Apollo mission, its failure and the death of its crew.  I think that the crew of the next manned mission had to be really brave to take that on.

The question, ‘what is out there?’ is, to my mind, still one of the bigger ones that the world is trying to answer.  I have always been interested in space exploration but have never had the desire to do anything as heroic as trying to become an astronaut, but whatever else we have to say about our world, we have had and still have some brave men in it.
