Happy New Year - Eastern Style
16 Feb 2018
Many of us have spent a lifetime visiting the many local Chinese Takeaway shops in Lewisham regularly, not to mention those all over London, but did you know that today London will host celebrations for the Chinese New Year. In Soho’s china town there will be processions lots of noise and celebrations as the old year is put to rest and the new one takes over.
We all know that this happens every year and many of us non-Chinese people see reports of it on the news, although the date of the celebration changes from year to year. This is because the Chinese New Year is based on the position of the moon.
Just in case you are interested, this year will be the year of the Dog and if someone you know, or you yourself, have a birth year which occurs in 1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006 or 2018, according to Chinese astrology they are very likely to be ‘Dogs’. There is a lot more to it than that though and we have found a web site that will explain.
Most borough wide celebrations in Lewisham have fallen victim to the cost of organising such events, although there is little doubt that Chinese families will be making their own plans to honour the day.
We hope that all readers of this post will join LPG when we offer all our pensioners, be they of Chinese origin or not, a Very Happy Chinese New year.
