Leeks and Daffodils…
01 Mar 2018
Dear LPG,
I am writing this letter to you about two weeks in advance in the hope that LPG will print it today, and I am also hoping that by now there will be the odd daffodil visible in our Lewisham Gardens and winter will be giving way to the kinder weather of Spring.
I feel an obligation to remind the people of Lewisham to give a thought to Wales today. This is our national day and I want to make sure that LPG reminds its Lewisham readers of that fact.
Like all the other areas of the British Isles we have lots to celebrate. We are renowned for our singing ability (although my voice was always in the minority there). Our sporting prowess is routed in rugby and we are fiercely proud of our language, our dragon and the train station with the longest name in the world; I am talking about Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch of course.
It is accepted that St David died on March 1st 589 AD, which is why the Welsh celebrate his life on this day each year. In one of his final sermons he was said to advise his audience about the importance of doing the little things that he had done during his life; which has given rise to the very famous Welsh saying “Gwnewch y pethau bychain mewn bywyd" which means Do ye the little things in life"
Did you know that while St Patrick’s Day is a national Bank holiday in Ireland and St Andrew’s Day in Scotland, Wales is still trying to have their national day recognised as such? Tony Blair’s administration rejected yet another official petition as recently as in 2007.
But I ask that the people of Lewisham, those of Welsh origin, or not, take a moment to remember St. David and our special national day today.
GD, Honor Oak Park
