Will you - won't you?

14 Jul 2017

Writing a will is important because it gives you an opportunity to do what you want with your belongings when the end of your time on Earth finally arrives.  The big problem is that it has become a bit of a racket with so many little companies offering the service these days and the cost varying widely.  How do you choose the best person to do the job for you? Solicitors tend to charge more while there are so many small will-writing companies offering their services.  They are more likely to provide a visiting service but tend to go in and out of business relatively quickly.

Perhaps the real problem is that anyone can legally set up a will-writing service not to mention the do-it-yourself templates that are available on line and in some high street shops.  So the question is “How can you be sure that your wishes are not contested once you have passed on?”

The Government has decided that there is no need for a regulating body in spite of a major campaign to put one in place. The Institute of Professional Will Writers took a pivotal role in influencing and promoting the case for regulation.  The IPW is the nearest thing there is to a regulatory body.  They have put in place a code of practice which is approved by trading standards and which all the will-writing companies can be part of.  The IPW also insists that their members have indemnity insurance in place although they have no control over the prices that their member companies charge.

Many people find making the decision to make a will daunting  enough but once that is made a telephone call to the IPW on 0345 257 2570 may help.  They will be able to advise and inform, and they will also be able to help you to find an approved provider in your area.
