Not always as mobile as you think

16 Jul 2017

Did you know that telephone numbers that begin with 07 are not always mobile numbers?  Numbers that start with’ 070’ or ‘076’ are often more expensive to call than others.  They can be premium telephone numbers and cost as much as £2.50 per minute to call.

You are often unlikely to find the charge until your telephone bill arrives, landline or mobile.  This is one of the many ways that companies use to offer services such as a way to answer a competition, technical support for computers and other gadgets, invitations to  give your opinion and many other services; in fact the companies that we have got used to offering numbers that begin with 09.

If you have a phone package, an agreement with your landline telephone provider,  where you can call any number at any time, the numbers they are referring to are usually the ones that begin ‘01’, ’02’, or ‘03’.   Some land line packages include unlimited ‘07’ mobile numbers while many mobile phone packages often include unlimited call minutes, but they are highly unlikely to include these.

So, if you find yourself with a telephone bill which is higher than you were expecting you will need to pin-point the number responsible for the extra charge and then contact your phone provider to find out the name of the company responsible.  Try to talk to the company in question first but having phoned both Ofcom tel: 0300 123 3333 and the Phone-paid Services Authority tel: 0300 303 0020 you are most likely to be told that it is your responsibility as a consumer to know how much it will cost you to call such a number.  So the only real advice we can offer is be warned.
