Knowing where to find it is the key.

15 Jun 2018

Dear LPG,

It appears that in this day and age there is always another password or PIN number that you need to know and so many of them are only needed every now and then.   The biggest problem is that when you really need to know and do not have the information to hand, your whole day’s plan can be stopped in its tracks.

Here is a little something that perhaps it is good to know about.  Many of us have broadband in our homes these days and if you have a lap top or a tablet they can interact with the internet because you have paid a phone company for the privilege of being able to use it.

I was lucky enough to have a visit from my friend who came all the way from Canada.  It should have been easy to connect her tablet to my internet when she arrived, but we spent a lot of time trying to work out what we had done wrong.  I phoned my son and he explained that I needed the router’s wireless password key, but I had no idea where to find it.

It turns out that it is usually one of three bits of information which are stuck to most routers and without it you may as well not have the router at all.  Adding the information to the visiting computer can also be complicated, but you really have to know the digital password before you can do any of that.

I have learned that the internet is all around us and the only thing that a router does is to give the permission needed for a computer to use it.

The point of my message is that, even if you don’t know what to do with it, knowing where to find your wireless router password key will allow someone who does to connect any computer to the internet while it is in your home.

LPG found some information, but reminds that each different service provider has a differently designed box.
