Know your Limitations!
21 Jul 2018
Dear LPG,
I have a bit of a story to tell,
The other day I decided that I needed to be able to print what I write. I was never good at writing neatly and age was not improving my style, so the idea was to give my letters a bit of an edge.
I am not sure if you are allowed to say where, so I will just say with a few bits of advice that I learned from my grandson, amongst others, I went off to one of the shops that sell such things and invested in a ‘state of the art’ computer printer.
My grandson did promise to ‘plumb it in ‘for me but you know what young ones are like… weeks (well days) went by and I could not wait to get started. I could not help myself; after a few days of patiently waiting for work to allow him a window in his schedule to help, I decided to just take a little look at the paperwork that came with it and I read the instructions. When I looked at the directions there were a few complicated diagrams and the textual instructions appeared to be repeated in at least ten languages. I finally found the English version and, for the most part, they looked fairly strait forward. There were more pictures than anything else and I thought I might have a go on my own.
I got started by reading everything first but then I just thought I would have a go at the first task on the list, and before I knew it there were wires all over the place. I soon decided that perhaps I needed a little more help than I first thought. I remembered reading your LPG article about that website called YouTube (►►►) and all the instructional videos you can find there and tried that, but I have to say that when I tried what they said the results were not quite the same.
In the end I decided to wait for my grandson but I could not get the thing back into the box!
Luckily I had not done too much damage, and a few days later my grandson came and, in minutes it was all up and running.
I told this story because when reading that news post, I forgot to remember the post script that LPG put in the very last paragraph, and that is their suggestion that anyone planning to get technical, regardless of in what way, would be advised to find at least one other person to be with them when attempting anything potentially complicated. I would say that it is really important to know your limitations and that, through that experience; I have learned a bit more about mine.
