Whether here or there – Happy Fourth of July
04 Jul 2019
Dear LPG
It is accepted that it is one of the most prominent countries in the world which I think, is why it appears that there are relatively few pensioners in our borough who originated in the USA. That may be a comment on the fact that the United States can be one of the more desirable places to live in the world.
The weather, in most of the northern states, is rather like ours in England for the most part and I have quite a few relatives that have lived their working lives over there. They tell me that ours is a much more leisurely way of life both for workers and for pensioners, and so many of the benefits we take for granted in London come at a high cost throughout the states on the other side of the Atlantic. I know that a slower pace and more relaxed way of life is what I am looking for as a pensioner which may explain why many will tell us that they have been and even during a visit can see the rush that appears to be part of the atmosphere over there. So we live with our more stately way of life while it is perhaps hard for those who have worked that way to slow down as much as we want to in the UK.
But the whole point of writing this message has been lost so far. I just wanted to wish all Americans who find themselves in the Borough of Lewisham today a very happy 4th of July. This is one of the independence days that gets more remembered and recognised in the UK than most, and my greeting goes out to all the Americans that I know and that I don’t wherever in Britain they might live; especially the older ones.
HW, Downham
