A memory for those old enough
24 Sep 2018
Dear LPG,
I read what was written on the subject of being guided by reminiscences that take us by surprise on 05 Mar 2018 (►►►), and the piece got me thinking. ZY is clearly not as old as me, because the series that got me thinking was a lot older then Knight Rider.
I was watching an episode of ‘Are you being served’ which featured an actor whose face provoked one of my ‘I am sure I have seen him somewhere before’ moments. When the end credits started to rise from the bottom of the screen, I worked out that the actor in question was Alfie Bass, and a little Googling got me the answer I needed.
He was one of the two characters that the series ‘Bootsy and Snudge ’ focussed in on. I remember seeing it as a child on a neighbour’s TV, when there were only one or two Television sets in any one street and my family were not one of the fortunate households that had one.
Googling can teach and remind you of so much about so many different subjects and on that day, I learned that Alfie Bass was of Russian heritage, acted in a lot of Shakespeare and other classic plays, directed plays in a long theatre career alongside his television and film involvement. He was involved in producing and acting Army concert parties during WWII and featured in so many films in the 60s and 70s. They included the Beatles’ film ‘Help’, the Bond film ‘Moonraker’ and so many more.
The internet taught me that ‘Bootsy and Snudge’ was a ‘spin off’ series inspired by its predecessor, ‘The Army Game’ but although I remember the former fondly, I don’t actually have any recollection of the latter, so there have to still be a few TV memories that alluded me because I was too young, in spite of the fact that I now consider myself very old.
FI, Lee.
