Do you remember this lot?

21 Nov 2018

Dear LPG,

I want to talk about Television.  Many of the younger members of my family have a bit of a go when talking about how many channels now play what they call ‘retro programmes’, but in spite of that there are many that are discovering some of those old television series for the first time and I have often been asked not to say how something ends, although I saw it back in the day.  When they are discussing the characters and plots it brings it all back to me and I have to admit to watching quite a lot of ‘retro TV’ myself.

I find it interesting that even though there is more and more new television drama, and in spite of the inferior visual quality of some of the older programs my 20, and 30-something aged grandchildren are as glued to their sets as we were.  In fact I am told that many are digitally improved.

This has to say a lot for the television series of the late half of the 20th century, when there was not so much bad language and, if there was a murder in the middle of a police investigation series the audience were more likely to have been shown less graphic evidence of it.

Back in the day there was something special about getting to the TV on time to see that week’s episode.  And even though the new viewers are more likely to be settling down to the ‘boxed set’ version of the thing, I think that our older dramatic television series have stood the test of time.
