Indulging in too much morning shut-eye

02 Dec 2018

Dear LPG

I have heard that your site is there for all pensioners, and even though I don’t actually live in the borough of Lewisham I suspect that this is a country-wide issue and may even be acknowledged as affecting pensioners beyond the seas surrounding the UK.

I know that one of the best things about being a pensioner is the freedom we acquire on the day we retire to slow down a bit, and the first way to do that is to please yourself about the time you get up in the mornings.  That worked really well for me during the first few months of retirement, but I now feel that I need to get back into the habit of getting up a bit earlier in the mornings.  I have suddenly become aware that I am missing out on so much of each day by getting up so late.

I remember having no problem when having to get up to do my job, which had an early start, and starting early every working day meant that I also finished quiet early and had quite a bit of time to myself in the afternoons and evenings, and though many older friends told me before I retired that I would find lots to do when I had all that extra time I did not really understand what they meant until I got there myself.  So now, after just one year of retirement, I am getting really lazy and getting up late is becoming a bit of a bad habit.  It also can be said that now that I have retired there is no real advantage in having more afternoon quality time.  Let’s face it a retired person has all the time in the world theoretically!

I know that illness often makes it more difficult for older people to get to sleep at night and that results in less quality sleep and the morning struggle to get out of bed, but I don’t even have that excuse.

It is also a fact that you can’t burn the candle at both ends, but I do not go to bed especially late, so I have to conclude that getting up in the morning works best if you have something to get up for.   So before tucking in for the night I have taken to spending a few minutes making a list of things that I want to do when I get up in the morning, because I think that helps to orientate my brain and brings me back to reality.

It helps a bit.
