Something to make us all a little less lonely

28 Feb 2019

Dear LPG,

Here is something which may interest some LPG readers.

I went to my church the other day and found a leaflet, with all the others on the ledge at the entrance, which interested me.  It was appealing for volunteers who are able to give just one hour per week.

The leaflet was an invitation to get involved with an organisation called Linking Lives UK, which links its volunteers with people who are lonely and need to find a friend.   There are three churches in our borough which have volunteers who take an hour a week to visit some of the lonelier locals and the leaflet I found featured the Crofton Park group.

Some of the people who benefit from visits really appreciate having someone to have a chat with, while other volunteers help their clients by accompanying them to places like the local hairdresser or to a café for a cup of tea.   The idea is to do with your client something that they cannot, or would be reluctant to do on their own and it surprising what a difference that can make to their week.

As we know, many of the loneliest people in the UK are older people, but there are a surprising amount of people of all ages who appreciate this service as well.

Many of the Lewisham volunteers are younger working people at the moment, but this is a perfect opportunity for the newly retired.  When you suddenly find that you have lots of time on your hands volunteering in this way could allow you an hour each week when you are making a difference, and finding yourself a new friend into the bargain is not a bad way forward.

The other thing that I have learned is that there are only three groups in Lewisham and that means that there is room for a few more so it is worth knowing that many organisations are usually church based, but not always.   Perhaps there are some newly retired potential coordinators looking for a challenge.

So while 2019 is still young, if you are a church goer you are likely to find one of their leaflets in your church, but if not, their website may be worth a visit.
