Pillow talk…
18 Apr 2019
Dear LPG
I have been doing a little survey by talking to some of my friends and the people I meet when at my weekly day centre for us oldies, and my research leads me to believe that getting a good night’s sleep tends to get more difficult as we get older. Each season presents us with different problems, but my inquisitiveness has also taught me that I am not alone when I say that getting really comfortable once you are snuggled up for the night appears to be one of the biggest aspects of the problem for most.
For me, the sleeping part is fine, but I am getting more neck ache and back ache during the days and I can only put it down to the way I sleep.
I have really tried to change my sleeping habits as recommended by HS in the article LPG posted on December 1st last year (►►►), but while I have followed the advice to adopt the best sleeping posture, I am not getting very far at all fast.
One of the people I talked with suggested that it might be my pillow as much as anything, and so I thought an online session to be the way forward and, as ever, a few minutes googling the subject has proved to be a bit of an eye opener.
I have worked out that different pillows are recommended for different types of sleepers. I found a very informative website that advised that you need to buy your pillows having worked out what sleeping position you usually adopt, and that not only the shape of the pillow, but the material it is made of, can make quite a difference to getting a good night’s sleep. I also found out that it is recommended that we renew our pillows at least every two to three years, depending on what they are made of, and the most expensive memory foam pillows are not suitable for all sleepers.
I found some pictures of the latest in pillows, the cervical pillows, which are designed to do wonders for the cervical part of your spinal column I think; the bit that keeps your neck upright during the day. I took a look on line and I have to say that some of the latest shaped pillows are mind boggling to say the least and a lot pricier than I remember.
One of my friends told me that she has bought a cheap travel pillow (one of the ‘c’ shaped ones that you are supposed to put around your neck when on a long journey in a car / coach or aeroplane). I have followed her lead, invested £3.00 on a micro beaded number, and have to report dramatically improved results.
