Four weeks of rubbish? That’s too much!
29 Apr 2019
Dear LPG
Before October 2017 we all accepted that our bins were emptied every week, and then came the big change. I understand that the fortnightly collections of certain types of rubbish helps the council to afford us and I for one never managed to fill my black bin to overflowing every week, but I always wondered what would happen if the bin got missed. It used to happen every now and then in the good old days and I do remember having a bit of a go back then, but now if the bin is missed it would be a month before it was revisited.`
This happened to me in late January of this year. Our collections are supposed to be on Thursday’s, and although I thought I had the right week the bin collection didn’t happen for us. I suppose I could have checked with neighbours to see if we were the only ones in the road who were missed, but I just assumed that I had got our collection day wrong. Then the next Thursday came and my bin was so full that the lid would not sit on it properly, but there was still no collection then either. I asked a friend, who knows how to check the council’s website which was when we realised that it would be yet another week before we were due another collection.
I got on the phone to Lewisham council (0208 314 6000) where, when you finally get through to Lewisham’s environmental refuse collection department, the recorded message will firstly imply that you can only contact them online. My suggestion for those that can’t do that is to listen to the end of their message where they allow you to input your telephone number and call you back. They did this quite quickly when I called and arranged to have the rubbish taken away within a couple of working days. I just gave my address and told them the problem.
So, if you are missed on your rubbish collection day give the council a call or access their website but prepare to leave your telephone number.
CH, Lewisham
