Pill popping the needs and wants..
Dear LPG,
I remember when I was in my early 60s when I was told that I would have to take one pill a day every day for the rest of my life. I felt deflated and dependant for the first time and the thought that if I missed one there would be potentially life threatening consequences really alarmed me. That was about ten years ago now and those years have taught me that it really is not a bad way to control my blood pressure. So I, like many people my age, do what many young ladies of a certain age do every day to keep the population of the country down, and that is just pop a pill first thing in the morning when I get up, so that I can maintain my place in society for a bit longer without the risk of a stroke.
But I have a friend who has no need to take any ongoing medication, but pops a variety of pills every day in order to be sure that her body is getting sufficient vitamins. My real worry is that she becomes dependant on them so that if they are no longer available her body is seriously affected in some way. I have always been of the opinion that, if we are fit and eat healthily, we should be able to get all the vitamins and minerals our bodies need from the foods that we eat normally.
My thoughts here provoked me to go to the internet where I found the information that I have asked LPG to share. I know that as we get older it may well be harder to have a cooked meal each day but, as long as we are not eating fast food every day of the week, we should really be able to get most of what we need without too much pill popping.
I wonder if people feel that supplements will maintain their wellbeing without their need to spend time on the preparation of real meals, or perhaps it is the taste of some of the foods involved that we are avoiding. In my opinion it is bad enough, as we get older and we need to add to the daily collection of pills that we take because our GP tells us to.
