Dear LPG,

I bought my cooker years ago, so many years that I can’t exactly remember when.  I have always been old fashioned when it comes to shopping for bigger items, so I went off to the local electrical shop when I needed one with my granddaughter in tow, and  while deciding which cooker I was going to buy,  I remember spending quite a bit of time being shown all the things it can do.  In fact, we were told so much information about so many cookers that day that I think our minds went into information overload mode.  It is not really fair for me to speak on behalf of my granddaughter but she looked as confused as I felt as we left the shop.

The cooker has always worked well and I remember the day that it arrived and was fitted by the gas fitters, but for all the really sophisticated functions the instructions mentioned, all I really ever learned about it is how to turn the hob, grill and oven on and off when I need to use them and not a lot else, after all ,what else is there to know really?

The other day my family planned a bit of a surprise party for my son which was to take place in my home and involved a bit of an outing followed by everyone coming back to my house for something hot to eat, and I thought it would be good to work out how the delayed cooking function on the cooker works but I knew I would not be able to do that on my own.  My granddaughter was on hand to help again and thank goodness she was.  We knew that the cooker was equipped to do this but I have never tried it before.  All we really needed to do was find the instructions to work out how.

Here lies the problem.  I have had the cooker for so long that I had no idea what I had done with the paperwork.  We tried this and that and ended up with an oven that would not come on at all for a while.  But then my granddaughter got out her mobile phone, typed in the make and model of the cooker, and we were able to find a copy of the instruction manual online. 

The moral of my story is when you throw away the packaging for any brand new appliance or gadget that you buy, no matter how long you have it and how well you think you know how it works, keep the instructions; and if that fails, with the help of someone who knows how, you nearly always will be able to find the relevant instructions on the internet.
