Embarrassing, smelly, inconvenient, sometimes painful …

Dear LPG
I think that those are the words that best describe it.
Can I cast your minds back to when you were young, just for a bit? When I was really young there was an elderly uncle who was always referred to as being the one that lived abroad and was very rich by comparison with the rest of the family who lived in England. We often heard about details of his luxurious lifestyle and wondered why he would ever want to leave it behind even for a holiday, but in spite of that, suddenly he visited England and booked into one of those swanky hotels in central London. My parents took my brother and I to visit quite a few times and we learned about things like room service and just how the other half lives, but there was one thing about him that stuck in our minds. My brother and I spent a lot of time avoiding his suite because of his continued flatulence which often affected our sense of smell and hearing. I have to say that at the age of ten, we little ones found it quite funny, until we found out that it was a symptom of a rather severe illness.
Now I am teetering on the edge of old age and I find myself suppressing a similar habit which has developed over the years. It was funny when I was a young child, but it is not so funny now that I am a sufferer. I am learning that the habit can cause pain and discomfort along the way… but no one talks about it.
I have always been told that you can find information about anything online and decided to put this to the test… the internet did not disappoint.
I learned enough to change my eating habits a bit, by adding a few extra ingredients into my diet which help, and I also learned that it is worth checking with your GP if the pain and repetitions really become a problem. There is evidence to show that, at its worst, people who suffer can be presenting the first indications of quite a few illnesses while, at best, it could be a reaction to something that you are eating or a medication that you are taking.
So, while I would rather not even have my real initials posted under this article, I would ask LPG to pass on the information I found for other LPG readers who may suffer in silence because of the embarrassment that the whole subject may cause them.
XX, Lewisham
XX has offered us a lot of information about the whys and wherefores surrounding the subject of flatulence.
