If you think you might be disabled, you should register.

17 Jul 2019

Dear LPG

I would like to ask our disabled readers if they have ever thought about registering as such?

I have an aunt who suffered a stroke recently which has seriously limited her mobility, and having done a little reading I believe that there are several reasons why, if you know someone who is in a similar position, you should encourage them to think about it.

It can give access to certain facilities such as disabled toilets with a key, easier access to some concessions, or discounts at some leisure facilities. Of course, you can only do it if you have a disability (and everybody prefers not to have one). However, if you have developed one, why shouldn’t you claim what belongs to you?

There are different types of disability: vision impairment, deaf or hard hearing, physical disability… each with their own way of registering (you can talk to you GP if you want to find out how).

Even though the criteria for inclusion is much more demanding these days, in some cases, you can get a blue badge, which will help you park closer to your destination, either as a passenger or driver. Now you can do it online. You will first be asked to identify your local authority and give some personal details to help them to deal quickly with your application. Keep in mind that you will also have to provide a passport style photograph, so make sure you have one on your computer. You will be asked for details of your medical condition and for information about the difficulties you have when operating parking meters.

The form only takes about 15 minutes to complete and remember that, if you cannot apply online, you can check with your local authority on the alternative application process.

PN, Charlton
