Finding the right qwerty key when you need it…
10 Sep 2019
Dear LPG,
I started using a computer after I retired and, though I have lots more to learn, I am proud to be able to say that I can do many things that I never thought I would possibly manage to do when I began. I can now contact people by email and skype; plan my route before making journeys and so much more.
I did start by attending classes designed for the older beginner but soon learned that it is really difficult for one teacher to get round to sorting out the many different problems that each individual student comes up against, when trying to learn the self-same aspect of the skill needed to achieve the smallest of tasks, and I am sure that I am not the only grandparent whose grandchildren try their best to help but frustratedly end up uttering those words, ‘…but grandma I showed you how to do that last time!’
Someone once told me that there is no real point in learning about IT, unless there is something in particular that you want to use a computer for. So, now I have mastered these skills, I thought it would be a good idea to find another challenge and I have.
Years ago at school I did typing lessons, each of which involved a book and a class of girls all clicking furiously while I tried to concentrate during each 40 minute session. Needless to say, I did not do well and never found a job which required me to type. But now I get quite frustrated when I see the children clicking away while I spend ages finding each letter I want. I really don’t fancy asking the kids or returning to the book but would like to improve my typing speed of practically no words per minute.
Talking to those around me has taught me that I am not the only frustrated typist that I know, so when I found the following gems on google, I felt the need to pass the pages on for any other LPG reader who would like to feel less frustrated about finding the right key when you need it.
I want to point out that while I am still not the quickest typist in the world online typing lessons, and the resulting practise, have made me a bit quicker, not only at typing, but knowing where the keys are on a QWERTY keyboard.
