Knitters – exercise your Carpal Tunnels

17 Sep 2019

Dear LPG,

I know that I am one of a disappearing breed these days because I like to have something on the go at all times.  While for many older ladies, that would usually be a book that they are reading, for me it is a bit of knitting; a jumper or cardigan that I am half way through.

I do get out quite a bit but really appreciate settling down with a couple of needles so that I can knit my way through the evening soap operas.   I tried to teach my daughter and even my granddaughter but it is a dying art because people just go out and buy their jumpers and cardigans these days and the label inside the garment appears to be much more important than a garment’s uniqueness.  knitwear can be made on a knitting machine, and it takes much less time to create your jumper  that way, but I subconsciously thing that while my fingers are busy I don’t feel quite so guilty about sitting and watching telly (which is something that I think I do far too much of these days).

I also have to say that I know how lucky I am to still be able to knit because two or three of my friends who used to spend hours knitting have had to give the habit up due to arthritis and other pains in their fingers.

I am lucky enough not to have any problems with my hands but for those knitters who are experiencing finger aches there are quite a lot of knitters’ exercises on the internet if nowhere else.  Some of my friends and I have been limbering up without even having to stand and I can feel the difference.   With this in mind I thought it would be a good idea to share some simple ones and I have found some videos which I hope will be taken up by other knitters, be they men or ladies.

I don’t have any problems with my hands but for those knitters, typists, piano players and crochet enthusiasts who are experiencing finger aches, before you decide to give up altogether have a go at some of the exercises specially designed for our hands, injuries and carpel tunnels.

While on the subject of knitting, LPG would like to again take the opportunity to thank readers for their efforts made back in 2013 when we shared the task of making some blankets for charity.
