Good news carried for us and for the environment.

Dear LPG,
When I used to read the Gazette’s newspaper version, I always remembered your main aim. Your statements always started by saying that they wanted to make sure there was, and will always be, somewhere where we older people can share our experiences and pass on any knowledge and advice we think our fellow readers would benefit from. So just in case there are any readers who don’t know, I would like to pass this bit of information on.
It has now been nearly four years since the government insisted that our supermarkets make us pay for our carrier bags and the term ‘carrier bag’ is fast making way for the ‘bag for life’. I think that this is a good thing as it is one way that we all can help to do a little towards taking care of this environment of ours.
But I realised something the other day and got it confirmed when I went to get a few groceries, I got all the way around the shop and to the front of the queue at Sainsbury’s before realising that the bag for life I took with me had a rip in it. I was about to pay out for another when the lady at the till told me if you take a broken Sainsbury’s shopping bag back to them they will replace it free of charge iand dispose of the damaged one.
Apparently they are not the only shopping chain to do this. More of the bigger grocery shops are offering to replace it with a new one provided you are in the right supermarket. I never realised it but their bags have the fact that they do this written on them.
I am not sure how many other supermarkets will take your old bag and give you a new one in its place but it is good to know that some of them do.
