It is never too late to learn…
26 Aug 2019
Dear LPG,
I know how important it is to be able to get out and about as one gets older, but I think that there are many pensioners who never lose that thirst for learning and I am one that finds myself in that category.
I have done some courses in my local adult learning centre, but it is often the case that what I would actually like to study is not available locally. Having looked there I decided to take a look online and I was really surprised to find out just what is available. I noted the article dated XXX which introduced some online touch typing courses for those who want to learn to type using all their fingers and wondered what other subjects were on offer.
I don’t think that many pensioners are seriously looking to beat deadlines when it comes to learning new subjects. I suspect that the journey is much more important than getting to the intended destination, but learning something new on the way might be the lift that will make the difference.
I have found a few options for those looking for something new to study, many of them free, and hope that some LPG readers find a something new to take an interest in and I have asked LPG to share them.
There appears to be no limit to what you can find if you are interested and I was also surprised to note how many of these courses offer students a certificate in evidence of their having attended at the least.
I still enjoy learning and I am told that keeping the mind occupied with fresh challenges helps to keep the brain ticking over and staves off, or at least slows down, the onset of dementia to some extent.
I know we are now in the middle of the summer with its light nights, but starting a course now might give an added pastime for those cold winter nights when they arrive again all too soon.
