A West Indian thought with a Halloween flavour…

31 Oct 2019

Dear LPG Readers,

I have written a few articles for LPG by now and, even though I may have not mentioned it so far, I am sure those who read the pages regularly will have worked out by now that my upbringing and writings stem from Jamaican origins.  With that said, I have a short tail to relate which perhaps should be told at this time of year.

The Widow of a close friend told me of the following guidance that was offered to her just months after her husband’s death.   It was recommended to her that she sell up and move out of the home that they had shared for so long.   What was there to be afraid of?

This couple had been together since the wife had been a teenager, they were married in the 1960s, in London and have a close loving family.  I knew her husband really well having worked with him as a colleague for over fifty years; this Bearing in mind that my friends widow, though still affected by the loss of her husband, had no supernatural anxieties about remaining in her home.  I wonder if her councillor in this case had confused the former emotion for the latter?

I have to ask why she should be afraid of a so called duppy?  (this is one of the Jamaican words for Ghost).

In my opinion this is an example of individuals whose views regarding certain aspects of life ‘back a yard’ have not changed in spite of their years of living in a completely different environment.  If one chooses not to educate one’s self and is happy to remain in their ignorance so be it.
