This time last year – keeping cool…
26 Jul 2020
Dear LPG readers,
I am writing this at the end of July 2019 in the hope that LPG will keep my message for a year before posting it.
There is no doubt about it, our summers are getting hotter. I am asking readers to cast their minds back two years ago to the Summer of 2018 when it became unbearably hot for many of us during a summer where there was hardly any break from the relentless summer sunny days. Last year (or should I say the summer that I am living through as I write) was quite severe too with temperatures for the whole of the summer. You might remember that July 26th was the hottest day ever recorded in British history with temperatures of 38.1C recorded in Cambridge just up the road from our borough.
I am sure that the intense heat kept a few people from getting a reasonable night’s sleep on a regular basis during that warm spell and it was one morning that I got up early enough to see an advertisement for an air conditioner which looked really impressive but cost about £40.00 which is a lot more than I could afford to spend at the time. But an early morning internet surfing session threw up the following link and allowed me to make a difference to the cooling effects of an old electric fan I had at home.
Because I wrote this a year in advance it could well be the case that the personal air conditioners cost a bit less by now, that some even newer innovation is available to provide a solution to the problem, that God has decided that 2020 should be more like the dreary summers of previous decades (I seriously pray that he offers us a happy medium when it comes to maximum temperatures this year) or that seeing the advertisement last year has provoked some to save so that they can afford to buy one of the air conditioning boxes in preparation for a repeat of the British weather offering we received last year.
But just in case none of the preceding events have proved to be the case, perhaps the handymen out there, who find the summer so wearing that they could do with a project to divert their minds, might take a look at the second video I have asked LPG to post with my message and hope that all are coping better with the 2020 summer? The videos all come from the USA but, depending on how technically minded you are there are quite a few variations of the basic theme.

As Ice (water) and electricity are both components of this project, anyone attempting this build should take care during the construction process.
SL shared the advert that triggered his thoughts….
… and the video which supplied the alternative version of the air conditioning equipment…
… and finally a reminder of what we lived through last year… the
