Older drivers, keep Driving

20 Nov 2019

Dear LPG,

I am an oldie who still drives and I am sure that, like many older drivers, I feel that my car is my lifeline.  With failing knees and painful hips, I know that I am really fortunate to be able to still get out, visit friends and do my own shopping particularly because I live alone.

I recently had a knee replacement which stopped me from getting behind the wheel for a few months and I realised just how much I rely on my little car for freedom.  I am sure that some readers have had something similar and know that patients are encouraged to get up and walk as soon as they can after surgery.  Though I found it interesting that the doctors that worked through that part of my health-related life dictated all sorts of things that they thought I should get back to, when I asked if I should try driving they told me that I should do that when I felt ready.

I remember spending lots of time wondering when exactly that would be while longingly looking out of my window at my stationary car and worrying about all the things that could potentially go wrong, but with the help of my daughter who spent lots of time usurping the position of driving instructor and my confidence in my ability to use the peddles adequately, I am back and getting around under my own steam and I find getting the wheels going has also encouraged me to walk more in spite of the pain that was initially involved.

So. for all those older drivers who have recently had similar surgery, I advise getting back in the driving seat as soon as it is safe.  This is as important as getting back on your feet and walking because, in all aspects of recovery, it is really easy to lose your nerve.

Remember that statistically we are not the most dangerous drivers in the country.
