Looking good while seeing well…
25 Nov 2019
Dear LPG,
I have always been myopic and since childhood I have spent about an hour every two years or so getting my eyes tested. I have to say that the opticians that I have encountered over the years have ensured that I could see well enough to do all the things that I have managed to do in my lifetime but when I look back at those old pictures of me over the years I have to admit to feeling really embarrassed when I see some of the frame choices I have made.
Admittedly some were purely made because of the fashion of the day. I have to admit to having been influenced by the ones that I have seen celebrities wearing too; the round wire framed ‘John Lennon’ ones and the really big, tortoiseshell frames of Coronations Streets Deirdre Barlow have featured on my face.
But then there were contact lenses which came in really handy when I went to those aerobic classes or I wanted to look particularly good because I wanted the world to see all the effort I put into my eye makeup. But my patience for applying lots of colour to my eyes, and the sort of exercise I do these days, does not demand that I wear the lenses anymore and, although the optician continues to tell me that my eyes have not changed that much, I still need help when it comes to seeing what is around me.
Being short sighted it is really hard seeing what you have chosen for your face, because once you swap your prescription glasses for the ones in the shop, you can’t really see what you look like anyway. I was never really sure what suited me and in my lifetime I have often found myself relying on the person in the shop to make choices that create lots of criticism once they are made up and my family and friends see them. Let’s face it once they are made, and at the price they cost these days, you are more or less stuck with them for a while. I just want to say that in spite of my short-sightedness I think that I would have to be hard pushed to have a laser beam pointed at my eyes.
So, this time I thought it may be a good idea to take a look at what the internet has to say on the subject and, for anyone in the throes of making a similar decision, I would like to share what I have found.
