Dear LPG readers,

I am one of many pensioners in Lewisham of West Indian descent and I am not trying to be negative but I decided to share this thought because I know that many LPG readers will relate to the circumstances which have provoked it

Over the years I have lost some close friends.  They have died leaving wives widows, husbands’ widowers or partners bereft and, in my case, six of them have one significant thing in common.

The ones who are left behind will never have another romantic attachment; no significant other in their lives again because their partners were their first and last loves and they treasure the memories of life with the boyfriend, or girlfriend, that became a husband or wife and raised a family in a foreign land that became home for over forty years.  Now they have a child or children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

I remember saying to one widow, “Just look what you two achieved.  The two of you have created a posse of young people, your offspring owe their lives to you and yours. And your achievement will live on with your family name as your male heirs live their lives into the future.”

 I can imagine each and every person in this position; lonely and alone with their nostalgic thoughts while they are asking why their spouse, a good person, had to die leaving wicked people all over the world to continue doing bad things to others.  Christian faith is often the only thing that keeps many strong and able to focus on the everyday chores that life demands of us all.
