The science behind a night time snuggle…

12 Jan 2020

Dear LPG,

I read, with interest, the article written by KA of Lewisham recently who wrote about something that really had affected their holiday experience adversely and I absolutely identified with the comments.

I also holidayed in Florida this autumn and during the holiday found myself feeling really unable to sleep during the nights.  It was my first ever visit and I stayed with my sister and her family.  Although her home is equipped with different versions of all the usual amenities, it did not take me too long to realise that, from my point of view, there was something missing.

There is a beautiful guest bedroom in my sister’s house and yet I found it impossible to sleep the first night that I was there.  I put that down to excitement and the fact that I was not sleeping at home.  The second night was no different and by the end of the first week of my stay I was pretty tired.

It was not that the room was too air conditioned. Not being used to the climate, I found the whole holiday experience left me relatively ‘hot and bothered’ during the days, and in spite of the indoor coldness, I was able to turn the air conditioning off in that room at night.  The amenity I was talking about was a duvet or blanket on the bed.  As you can imagine they don’t really have a need for blankets because it is warm enough, but for some reason the top sheet and one thin blanket was not enough and I missed the ability to be able to snuggle up under the covers.   We went out and bought a duvet at the beginning of week three and I was fine for the rest of the holiday.

I thought it was just me but now I have returned home I took a look at what Google had to say on the subject and, although I did not find much information about duvets, I did find that one can actually buy a ‘weighted blanket’ and a bit about the advantages of having one. I have to say that I think that the bulk of a duvet works and is more important to me than weight, but the snuggle factor had to be the reason for my holiday bout of insomnia.

I liked what I saw of America and am planning to go again in the not too distant future.  I am happy to report that my sister is keeping that duvet ready for my return.

SW shared the information she found but LPG will remind readers that, although the information is usually sound, it often arrives with an advert…
