Drinking habits – how good are yours?

Dear LPG
Last year I wrote a blog which LPG posted about the importance of drinking water (►►►) and I have continued to keep my water-drinking habit up and still feel that it is doing me good, but I was busy Googling the other day when I came across a few new interesting facts (depending on who’s research you believe). The information is American, but it gave me a little food for thought which I felt I should pass on.
We are always being told how important it is to drink plenty of water every day and, depending on which articles you find, there are so many things that this habit can do for you, but I recently found an interesting article which caught my attention, while it dispels a few things that I thought I knew about the advantages and disadvantages of keeping up the drinking habit.
For instance, this article says that the water content of your food counts when calculating your daily intake, and when you drink tea, coffee and other hot drinks the water in those should also count. I am not that heavy, but I also found it encouraging to learn that drinking water can help you to lose weight, while the recommendation that it is not vital for the average person to drink water if they don’t actually feel thirsty may just have coloured the amount of times I pick the glass up and take a sip of the stuff since I learned that fact.
I know that for nearly every fact you read on the internet you are likely to find some other research that discounts it a few clicks away, but I found this article worth reading.
While reading, I got thinking about exactly how much water a day is recommended. I can remember exactly where I learned that we should drink 1.5 litres of water a day to stay healthy, but I also found it interesting to discover that there are now online hydration calculators which are designed to work out exactly how much water we need to drink, depending on variables like our weight and how much exercise we get each day, and I have learned that we need to factor in the amount of water we get from the food we eat and other drinks that we drink.
I have asked LPG to leave the details at the bottom of my message, but I have to say how much water we need to drink a day seemed to be much simpler to calculate last year.

MJ left us the information that has changed her mind a little about her liquid intake…
And she also has found us three hydration calculators so that we can compare our intake needs.
