The Bible; if you have read it, did you understand it all?

25 Jan 2020

Dear LPG

I have come to the conclusion that people can be put into many categories and, in this instance, while I try to keep things simple, I am using the following four.  The four groups I see are those who have a Christian belief, those who are not sure what they believe, those who believe in one of the many other religions and those who believe that believing in any faith is not the way forward.

Perhaps what I have to say today will register with the first and second groups that I mentioned above more than the others.  If you live in Lewisham it is likely that at some time or other you will have answered the front door to someone who offers you some Christian literature and starts asking you the sort of questions that make you want to say, ‘No, not today thank you’, even though you sometime spend quite a while at the door trying to get them to leave.

When the surveys come through the door and I get to the demographic page, I feel that I can confidently put my religious preference down as ‘Christian’, but the ‘front door’ question that so often gets asked is, ‘Ok then, why Does God allow so many horrid disasters to happen?’.  They will always tell you to take a look in the Bible for the answer, but that often doesn’t help.

To be honest I think most of us who have tried, find the Bible a pretty difficult read.  It is true that there are now many modern versions, and the problem does not result from an inability to understand what you are reading.   It is more a case that when you get to the end of each chapter the point is often missed.

But they do say that the internet has the answer to all questions and though I have not found a direct answer to this question, I have found a series of videos that explain each chapter and I would refer anyone who is having a little trouble here, to take a look at the link that I have left below.  The examination of each book follows on from the previous one and there are some other categories in the series that might also interest you. I think that the nearest answer to the question about the troubles of the world can be found in the video dedicated to Job.

BT left this link to Genesis and informs that explanations of the chapters follow on from here.

LPG has also been requested to leave the link to the explanation of the book of Job which helped with the answer to the question she highlighted…
