Money; is collecting really worth it?
24 Apr 2020
Dear LPG,
Timothy in the bible says that the love of money is the root of all evil, and that statement got me thinking a bit.
I think that I have shown a little love for it over the years but not quite in the way the bible means. I have always been fascinated with the famous people and events which are often depicted on the coins that we spend and buy.
I think that the first one I really remember buying was made to commemorate the queens silver jubilee but there were also the ones that we did not have to buy. I am talking about the coins that were in circulation and that many of us acquired when they were thrown in with your change when you went to the shops.
As I have got older I have been giving some of the commemorative ones that I have bought to my grandchildren because the one thing that I remember being told is that they will appreciate in value, but I came across the articles that I have asked LPG to leave a link for at the bottom of this post which has got me wondering.
I also made a point of keeping a few of the more unusual 50p pieces when I first ever came across one, and I know it all depends on the condition as well as the actual coin, but as usual the internet has a few conflicting stories to tell. On one hand it has taught me that it is worth taking a look every now and then just in case when you next pay for something in the shops, or when you find a few old coins in the bottom of a drawer, they are worth more than you think, while on the other hand; actually finding someone willing to pay what they are reported to be worth could be a bit of a challenge.
I have found a few websites which will give a rough estimation of some of those coins’, (both commemorative and current) values but it appears that the only real way of getting their real value means learning all about how to deal with coin collectors, if what I have read is to be believed, because the banks are reluctant to have them back.
