Why must the wicked be strong?

07 May 2020

Dear LPG,

I think that, for those who live alone and do not have the diversion of younger children to help us through this difficult time, being forced to stay at home has given us all time to think about things much more intensely than we have had the opportunity to do for perhaps, any other time during our lives.

It is strange how the smallest of things can set your mind on a course that, you have only ever given a passing thought until that point and that somehow you have little control over.  I managed to find a radio station which played music which reminds me of my West Indian home when this thought was triggered.

It must be over 50 years since I heard a song that the station played.  It was written by an artist called Slim Smith and its lyrics asked the question ‘Why must the wicked be so strong’; conscious lyrics that are still so relevant in the 21st Century.

As I relaxed in a chair, listened and let the music take over a truth emerged.   I think that any who really thinks about it must realise that the world is infested with many wicked people quite a few of which are in powerful positions.  Just think about our world leaders.  Many are wicked individuals who are powerful enough to get away with their wicked deeds; some of them beyond comprehension.  We see the results of their work every day, some of it being immediate while other such actions take years to become common knowledge.

If one is religious, they may well believe that Satan is strong.  When I get into discussions with others about the wickedness of man.  I would say to them that from biblical times the devil has always had his followers.  They need the backing of weak followers that allow them to flourish, strive and be strong.

I think that most people, with hindsight, would agree that Hitler was a prime example of a wicked leader, and others will argue that there are many more leaders that have, and will, go down in history in the same category proving that, for now, the wicked are strong.
