The value of vinyl these days…
11 Jun 2020
Dear LPG,
We have all had extra time on our hands lately and, apart from all the other things that I have resolved to do, one of the things at the top of my list was working through the many things that I have amassed over the years.
During my grand sort-out I focussed on my old record collection. I think that I lived through one of the most ground-breaking ages of music, although I know that there have been others. Just looking through a box or two that have ended up under the stairs did what all boxes of memories do and it took me much more time than it should have to work my way through my memories.
The experience took the best part of a day as I looked at the labels and recalled the sounds of the songs. I know that you can call most of them up with YouTube but it is not the same.
In the absence of a record player, well I do still have one but I would be frightened to plug it in after all this time, I found myself listening online and while I was at the computer I digressed and found two other variations on the theme which I think worth sharing.
The first is that, in spite of all the CDs, DVDs and pop videos that also came and went over the years, good old fashioned record players can still be bought, both authentic and new, so that you can play your vinyl originals, hiss and all.
The other thing that caught my eye is just how much some of these vinyl masterpieces are worth, even though I would be very hard-pushed to part with any of mine. I found some information on the subject and thought that others who have a collection would be interested to see its potential worth.
