Versed thoughts (chapter 10): Couples

10 Jul 2020

Dear LPG,

In the light of all that is going on at the moment I got to thinking about social distancing.  I think that all the newer rules we are being given, which appear to have been devised to reintroduce our country to the notion of getting out and about again, have reminded me of something that we did not have to think about so much when there were less people on the streets.  My way of dealing with such thoughts is to put them down in verse.  I would like to share this one with today’s LPG readers…

Couples

Corona-careless couples in Whitstable, my town

Jogging, cycling side by side, you really get me down.

Silently approaching, at speed you pass me by,

Please spare a thought for others who are not quite so spry.

You scare me at the Harbour as I slowly make my way,

When you suddenly whizz past me, I fear that ‘droplet spray.’

Have you not heard of single file and care and courtesy?

Do your ‘couple rights’ mean more to you than my ‘solo rights’ to me?

You scare me on the pavements, on the path beside the sea,

Your swiftness spoils my morning walk when you act selfishly,

I happen to be single, that’s just how life’s turned out,

But coupledom is no excuse for acting like a lout.

My experience has helped me form a strategy to use,

To make you keep your distance, so my space you don’t abuse.

I hold my stick out sideways as I walk my daily mile,

I hope that will persuade you to get in single file
