Dear LPG,

When I was very young my family always had a cat.  I could write about each one because they were each so individual with such different personalities.  Unlike dogs, they are much more independent but somehow they always manage to be around for a cuddle when you feel down and lonely.

At that stage of life when you have limited time for pets they offered the best of both worlds because they have this unique way of being there when you can make the time for a bonding session, and amusing themselves when you are busy, but now that I am older my current cat has become even more significant and now that I seem to need more of her time she is happy to give it.

My present cat is getting on now and I have always thought that getting a second cat might be one way of ensuring that if anything happens to my existing one I will have the comfort of one while I get over the loss of the other.  I think that I would need to get another if, or when, the inevitable happens but I also think that waiting would feel more like trying to replace the one that had gone hence my wish to have two cats at one time. However, a little check on the internet has taught me that getting the one to accept the other can also have its problems. 

I have done a little research into the subject and learned a few things.  It is often about the smells and starting off with separate territorial spaces when introducing one cat to another if you don’t want a cat fight on your hands from what I have read, but there is much more to it than that, although you may just pick a cat that instantly gets on with your beloved pet even though that is less likely to happen.   

I went to YouTube for a few pointers and thought that what I learned might come in handy for anyone who is thinking along the same lines as me. I hope to be able to let you know how we all get on…
