Alnatives to the kitchen chopping challenge.

Dear LPG,
I read what BC had to say on the subject of protecting your fingers when cooking (►►►) because I am one of those that still likes to do it myself when it comes to preparing many of my meals. While I can, I believe that cooking what I call ‘a real dinner’ is far better than pulling one out of the freezer, although I do get lazy sometimes.
But as my fingers have got older, I have to agree that the slicing gets harder and having watched the videos that BC suggested, with the best will in the world, my fingers just can’t do the slicing and chopping as well as they used to anymore. It is taking longer and, although my fingers are not regular casualties, touch wood, there has been the odd near miss.
I know that at a time like this I could use my fully-fledged food processor, but who wants to do all that extra cleaning up for the sake of an onion? I think that this could well be the time when lots of pensioners give up cooking altogether but, there are a few alternatives to doing the chopping yourself that have often started their commercial lives on those TV home shopping food channels where they are the latest craze for a while before they then get forgotten. The saddest thing is that when we see them we often don’t need them and when we get to an age where we could do with their help we have forgotten them.
When it comes to the little herbs and things they are even more fiddly and the ground and dried versions just don’t taste quite the same. I find that there is nothing nicer than a little nutmeg on my porridge, pepper on my dinner and garlic also presents a challenge.
So I would like to remind readers about a few of those gadgets that might just make all the difference when your fingers begin to hint at the fact that they need a little help.
I have left some links to demonstrations for people whose fingers have reached a stage where chopping is a bit of a challenge and, although some of them are quite expensive, they might just make all the difference.
Please don’t think that I am trying to help the advertisers out here, I just hope that some of the links might help LPG readers…

KE left some links to related information and LPG would stress her point she is not suggesting the particular products shown. Just that readers might appreciate her ideas while reminding you that there are many alternatives available…
