Televisions; it’s not all about watching them.

23 Jan 2021

Dear LPG,

From my present perspective, I can see a pretty bleak Christmas celebration on the horizon this year, but I have decided to look past that and onto other things.

I am writing this message in early December and, from my perspective, this year will be a bit different for all of us, but I have now bought nearly all the presents that I plan to give to family and friends and worked out how they are going to get them on the day. It has been a bit more of a logistical undertaking this year but in a world where so many of us have been confined to barracks for so long, I am sure that this process started a lot earlier for many pensioners. I know that it has given me something to focus on while at home.

Every year once that is over, I buy myself a present because I am very good at asking myself what I really want for Christmas and getting the correct answer, even if I have to wait until after the Christmas rush.  This year I have decided on a 2nd television.  I think that the year has forced us to watch so much more than we usually do and all that watching has included so many adverts about the latest models that I am learning what I am missing.

The problem is that there are so many to choose from these days and the list of specification details can truly confuse, no matter how big or small your budget, but for all that it is not until you get it home that you work out what the remote control is really like.  When buying for yourself the television may not be much of a surprise but I find that the remote control always is.  There is always information about what they do but never a lot about how big the buttons are.

For me, the buttons seem to be getting smaller and smaller, as does the writing which tells you what each one is for, while there seem to be so many more of them, and if you have arthritic fingers changing channels and adjusting the volume can be a nightmare.  The remote control is the one thing that most televisions don’t do a lot of specifying about.

I cannot be the only person who has the problem because I have now learned that there are quite a few remote controls with bigger buttons designed for fingers like mine

So if you are going to treat yourself or any family member plans to do this for you, it is worth adding questions about the size, pressure needed and feel of the remote control to your list of queries before you buy, or at least making sure that it is compatible with one of the ‘big button’ remote controls on the market; although getting someone to set it up for you can be the start of a whole different story.

SA Catford.
