Listen, what is your house trying to tell you?

26 Jan 2021

Dear LPG,

I am not trying to scare anyone unduly but I just want to ask my fellow readers if, for some reason during lockdown your house seemed to make more noises than ever; especially during the night.

I think that those little creaks and tapping sounds have always been there but I have had more time to actually listen, due to the fact I seemed to have spent a lot more time, doing a lot less over the past six or so months.  I know that not everyone got depressed during lockdown and I was lucky because I do not live alone but the days seemed to get longer and, to deal with that, I think that there was an element of getting to bed earlier that many experienced.

The big problem with that is that I got into the habit of getting too much sleep with the result that I often found myself awake in the middle of the night, and while all is quiet you can truly hear all the really loud noises that a house can make.    I found it easier to put a radio on and choose something to listen to which drowned them out to some degree while I did my best to choose a station designed to ‘bore’ me back to the land of nod, but perhaps because it is so quite at that time, the creaks, groans and tapping sounds always appear to be louder than ever.

I recently found an online article or two which did make me think that those sounds could represent warning signs of issues that might need to be addressed at your address, and so, without trying to depress readers as we look towards a possible winter lockdown of more night-time house sounds, I would like to share some information that just might forewarn readers about what their houses are really trying to tell them…
