Truman, turnips and today…

26 Jul 2021

Dear LPG,

Thank you for all the varied bits of information and entertainment that you manage to post on your website.  They have truly given me something to help me fill my lockdown days.  (I say ‘have’ because I truly hope that by the time LPG post this bit of writing, Covid-19, self-isolation and lockdown might be well and truly over)

I read one of Foster Murphy’s poems (►►►)  and discovered another bit of turnip history.  I am writing a few months in advance having found out that 73 years ago today American President Harry Truman convened a special session of congress which lasted two weeks.   According to Wikipedia, it began on July 26th, and ran until August 3rd and became known as the ‘turnip day session’, and it gives me a perfect excuse to remind readers of that poem.

I have another reason for telling you this.  While I felt exactly the same about them when I was a boy, I recently had my very own ‘turnip day session’ when I tried turnip chips, one of the recipes that LPG left at the bottom of that post, and it was surprisingly good.  Perhaps on this Turnip day (which is not national by the way), this fact might get a few more people trying them again…
