Now is the time to answer this question with a resounding ‘Yes.’…

14 Apr 2021

Dear LPG readers,

After a year of being locked down and living with restrictions which have left many of the older people who enjoyed a social life which included lots of physical activity, the question we all need to ask ourselves, is ‘have we been good to our bodies?’

I know that some readers will be able to answer that question with a resounding ‘yes’, but I bet many of them have an exercise routine that has suffered because of the restricted area that they have at home to continue to do the job properly.  I have to say that I am quite worried for those who, in answer to my question, are swivelling their heads from side to side rather than up and down, and who may be getting the only exercise they are likely to today.

I just want to remind readers about how important it is to exercise. Before all the restrictions started I used to go to two clubs where exercise was part of the routine and I must admit that when they first closed down last March I did try to carry on at home but, after a while I got lazy.

If you have been watching the news over the past nine months you cannot help but hear about the depression and loneliness that self- isolation has caused, and while talking to friends on the phone I have noticed that the whole coronavirus episode has resulted in many things including some very positive minds becoming more negative because of all the isolation and loneliness that has been caused.  I know that it has had an effect on me too but it is a fact that physical exercise and mental exercise go hand in hand so even if you don’t have room at home to swing a cat let alone your arms, jump around (if you still can), or practice a fully loaded exercise routine every day, getting that exercise that both your body and surroundings will allow, is not a bad thing.

The thing to remember is that, as we get older, the tight six-pack and how you look after weeks of effort are not the only reward of physical exertion.

LPG would again like to mention the importance of checking with your GP before starting any exercise that you have not tried before.
